Me and my older cousin used to play Ocarina of Time on the N64 when I was about 4 years old. She would let me play Link and while she took the second controller and pretend to play as Navi (For those who haven't played OoT, it's the tiny fairy NPC that follows Link around and gives him hints). Since I was only 4 , she would read and act out all the dialogue while I played, all while pretending to be my faithful fairy companion.

This is how my kid was around the same age. If I tried playing Rocket League with my controller and he wanted it, but I gave him a secondary controller, he would notice his button pushes did nothing. Then he would reach for my controller. He's been extremely observant since day one.
